A message from Dave...
When I was fifteen years old, I passed out on the football field to later find out I had developed diabetes. My doctor was an excellent physician and was
at the forefront of diabetes education and research. He encouraged me to take my medicines, exercise and eat well. When it came to my diet he taught
me the lessons about looking for color on my plate. He said one with a wide variety and bright colors was a much more healthy choice of food. From the
beginning I was told to watch out for imitations. The chemicals and dyes are not healthy and it would be much better to not have sweets with artificial
sweeteners. He used the example of a hot fudge sundae. Dr Spratt told me on my birthday to go ahead and get the REAL thing and adjust my insulin
accordingly. The lesson of sticking with the things that are REAL –vs – imitations or fake has followed me my whole life.
On a semi regular basis I ask my three sons about their prayer life. I ask them to share with me what kinds of things they are talking about with God
when they are praying alone. In doing so I am looking to see, one, if they are praying alone. Second, as their dad I want to know if they are just praying
with me or if they have a dynamic relationship with God away from my influence or the influence of anyone else. You could say, I want to make sure
what they have with God is REAL.
I know my personal prayer is that I don’t ever have a religious spirit, or just go through the motions as a pastor. I pray my service to God and you grows
from my time of being REAL with God. I wish the same for you. No games. No pretending. Nothing fake. No chemical preservatives. Just real before God
and each other.
Over the past 12 years, the paths of the Dickens family and the Semones family
have crossed many times. We'd say hello as we passed in the halls at school,
our kids attended birthday parties together, and Dave was Headmaster at our
eldest daughter's school for her last year in attendance. But It's only recently that
we've learned that we share a love for God and for the outdoors.
The impact of Dave's "Impact Moments" is spreading far and wide, and Jed and I
are grateful that God has seen fit to cross our paths yet again.
